UNA SOFTBALL TAKES TWO FROM CHOCTAWS

FLORENCE – A pair of home mercy-rule victories on Saturday put the No. 6 University of North Alabama softball team within a single game of tying a school record. The Lions defeated Mississippi College 10-2 and 8-0 in six innings each to move to 39-5 on the season, one game shy of the school-record 40 set during the 2006 and 2013 campaigns.

Reagan Tittle and Harlie Barkley each went 3-for-4 in the opener, while Raven Cole pitched a no-hitter in the second game to complete the sweep. With the two wins, the Lions also improve to 23-3 in Gulf South Conference play, increasing their first-place lead in the standings.

In the opener, UNA grabbed the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. It was the seventh straight game that the Lions scored in the opening frame. An RBI-single by Tittle and a run-scoring double by Barkley gave the home team the early advantage.

The score remained the same until the top of the fourth, when Mississippi College plated a single run to cut the lead in half. UNA, however, responded in the bottom of the inning with a three-run home run by Shelby Woodard. The pinch-hit shot down the left field line came with two outs and gave the Lions a 5-1 lead.

The Choctaws added another run in the top of the fifth before UNA put the game out reach with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Courtney Shields and Tittle led off the inning with back-to-back singles before Brooklynn Clark launched a three-run homer of her own to make the score 8-2. Barkley followed with a double and later scored on an RBI-single by Amy Carden to give the Lions a seven-run lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Shields singled and reached second before Barkley's one-out double ended the game in walk-off fashion. Shields also went 2-for-4 in the opener. Hillary Carpenter (18-3) got the pitching victory. The junior scattered six hits and struck out five in the circle.

In the second game, Cole became the third different UNA pitcher to toss a no-hitter this season after striking out eight batters over six innings. The junior from Orange, Texas, retired 20 of the 24 batters faced and improved to 20-1 on the season. She also extended her streak of 13 straight scoreless innings.

UNA did not break the scoreless tie until the bottom of the fourth inning. After Clark led off the frame with a single, pinch-runner Destiny Wright scored from second on an RBI-single by Madeline Lee. The Lions pulled away late in the game with five runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.

Three doubles by UNA and two errors by the Choctaws highlighted the fifth inning. Barkley, who had three doubles in the opener, added another in the inning to give her 14 on the season.

With a 6-0 lead and two outs in the bottom of the sixth, UNA used three consecutive hits to end the game. Back-to-back singles by Shields and Tittle brought Clark to the plate, who doubled to left center to drive in both runs. The two RBI gave Clark 52 on the year, tying a school record held by Jessica Liddy and Lindsey Bates who each reached the total in the 2006 season.

Bailey Nelson, Tittle and Clark had two hits each as the Lions reached double digits in hits for the 19th time this season.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game GSC series on Sunday with a single game set for 1 p.m.
