LION SOFTBALL SWEEPS UWA TO REACH 30-WIN PLATEAU

LIVINGSTON – The University of North Alabama softball rallied to win the first game, then got a mercy-rule victory in Game 2 to cap a double-header sweep at West Alabama on Friday. The 6-4 and 10-2 victories give UNA a 30-4 overall record, including a 17-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

In the opener, the Lions trailed 4-0 after UWA's Bree Thompson connected on a grand slam in the bottom of the first inning. UNA starter Megan Garst, however, settled down and pitched six scoreless innings afterward, scattering three hits with seven strikeouts.

At the plate, the Lions were able to answer in the top of the third inning. Back-to-back RBI-singles by Kara Brewer and Hannah Shollenberger cut the deficit to 4-2.

In the top of the fourth, UNA got two more runs to tie the game. Alex Brown started the two-out rally with a double to right field. She later scored from second on a wild pitch. Bailey Nelson then singled to reach base and scored on Meleah Hargett's triple to left center to tie the game.

Harley Stokes gave North Alabama the lead for good. Her home run to right center put the Lions ahead 5-4. It was the GSC-leading 11th homer of the season for the freshman from Demopolis.

West Alabama got a pair of base runners in the bottom of the sixth inning before Garst recorded a strikeout to end the threat. At the plate, UNA answered with an insurance run in the top of the seventh. After reaching on an error, Hargett was sacrificed to third base. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Shollenberger.

Brown finished the opener 2-for-3 at the plate. Stokes and Nelson also each went 2-for-4. Garst improved to 12-2 after the complete-game win.

In the second game, UNA produced 10 runs off 14 hits. After plating a single run in the top of the fifth inning to take an eight-run lead, Laken Distefano finished off a two-hit victory by pitching a scoreless frame in the bottom of the inning.

Distefano, a freshman from Florence, allowed just two hits and added a pair of strikeouts to improve to 12-1 on the year.

Each team scored twice in the second inning before the Lions finished the game with eight unanswered runs. UNA strung together four straight singles to take the early lead. Sydney Sanders' hit to left center scored both runs.

After the Tigers plated two runs in the bottom of the second, North Alabama used a five-run third inning to take control. Stokes singled home a run before Veronica Westfall drove in two more runs with a single to center field. Sanders followed with a two-run home run to deep center to give the Lions a 7-2 lead.

Back-to-back RBI-doubles by Shollenberger and Stokes made the score 9-2 in the top of the fourth before another run-scoring double by Hargett in the fifth wrapped up the scoring.

Stokes led the way at the plate with a 3-for-3 showing. Hargett, Brewer, Shollenberger, Westfall and Sanders all added two hits each. Sanders finished the second game with four RBI.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a single game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
