UNA MEN TOP CHOCTAWS 73-68 FOR FIRST ROAD WIN

CLINTON, Miss., – A balanced scoring attack, along with a solid night at the free throw line paved the way for the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to pick up a key 73-68 Gulf South Conference victory at Mississippi College Monday evening. With the win, UNA is one of four teams with a 5-3 GSC record with a total of seven teams within a game of first place in the league standings. The first road win of the season gives the Lions an 8-6 overall record.

North Alabama went 20-of-22 from the foul line, including a perfect 6-for-6 showing in the final 1:15. Jeff Hodge, Dimarrio Jackson and John Fletcher each sank two free throws down the stretch as the Lions held off at late Mississippi College rally.

UNA led by as many as 15 in the first half and carried a 38-26 lead into the break. The Choctaws would get no closer than three points until the final two minutes. After a pair of free throws got the Choctaws to within two with 1:40 remaining, Hodge answered with two foul shots of his own to push the lead to 69-65 at the 1:15 mark.

The Choctaws' Johnny Rucker converted a three-point play with a basket and free throw to pull the home team to within a single point with 21.4 seconds to play. After two foul shots by Jackson pushed the lead to 71-68, Fletcher grabbed a rebound off a missed Mississippi College three-point attempt. Fletcher, a senior from San Diego, Calif., then sank to more free throws to make it a two-possession game at 73-68 with 9.1 seconds remaining. The Choctaws were unable to connect from there.

Jackson and Fletcher scored 12 points each to lead the Lions. Austin Timms added 12 points while true freshman Tavaras Tolliver, who was three-for-three from three-point range, rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 10 points on the night. For the game, eight different players scored for North Alabama as the Lions had a commanding 24-3 advantage in bench scoring.

Jonathan McGee led Mississippi College (4-6 overall, 3-5 GSC) with a game-high 20 points.

UNA will play at Christian Brothers Saturday at 4 p.m. before closing a four-game GSC road stretch two days later at Union.
