FLORENCE – A 31-8 surge in the third quarter propelled the University of North Alabama women's basketball team to an 85-59 exhibition win over Alabama A&M Friday evening at Flowers Hall. Clinging to a 37-30 lead at the half, UNA broke open the game

Five players reached double digits in scoring, including freshman Ivy Wallen's game-high 24-point outing. KeKe Gunter added 16 points on the night while Shay Trent tossed in 12 points for the Lions. Jaclyn Heath also had 11 points, while Katelyn Nunley rounded out the top scorers with 10 points on the night.

An up-tempo style and constant defensive pressure took its toll on A&M. The Bulldogs committed 30 turnovers in the game, leading to 23 UNA points.

Gunter led the third-quarter attack for UNA, scoring 12 points in the period as the Lions began to pull away. She scored eight points, including back-to-back steal-and-layups during a 13-0 run that gave UNA a 30-point lead. A free throw by Trent made the score 65-35 at the 2:33 mark of the quarter.

Alabama A&M got no closer than 23 points the rest of the way. Jameica Cobb led the Bulldogs with 15 points.

North Alabama will play another exhibition contest Monday evening at Tennessee Tech. The Lions will officially open the regular season Nov. 11-12 at the GSC/SIAC Regional Crossover in Tuskegee. UNA will take on the host Golden Tigers Friday at 5:30 p.m. before facing Claflin the following day at 10 a.m.
