UNA MEN FALL TO WEST GEORGIA

FLORENCE – Stephaun Branch scored 28 points and pulled down 17 rebounds to lead West Georgia past North Alabama Monday afternoon in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. With the win, the Wolves (6-3 overall) remained unbeaten in GSC play, getting three straight road victories to start the season. UNA falls to 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league action.
 
The Lions trailed just 31-26 at the break and were within two in the opening minutes of the second half. Branch, however, connected on a basket and free throw to cap a three-point play and start a 10-0 run for the visitors. The lead remained double digits the rest of the way.
 
After a basket by Dimario Jackson cut the deficit to 59-47 with 8:33 remaining, UWG used another run to pull away. UNA went 4:10 without a field goal while the Wolves began a 16-2 run to break the game open. Shannon Fowler scored nine points during the stretch for UWG. Branch capped the spurt with a dunk in transition to make the score 74-49 with 4:23 remaining.
 
Jackson led the Lions with 22 points. The senior went 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Sharwyn McGee added a double-double performance with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Austin Timms also had 11 points on the day.
 
West Georgia got the double-digit road win despite having two technical fouls and committing a season-high 27 turnovers. The Wolves shot 57.7 percent from the floor in the second half.
 
UNA will not play again until Dec. 31, beginning a GSC road swing at Valdosta State.
