COMEBACK FALLS SHORT FOR UNA MEN

FLORENCE – Hunter Ray hit one of two free throws with 7.5 seconds remaining to give Mississippi College a 77-76 lead and a three-point attempt by North Alabama bounced off the front of the rim, preserving the one-point victory for the Choctaws Thursday evening in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The second straight loss leaves UNA with a 14-10 overall record and 11-7 mark in GSC play.

UNA trailed by as many as 21 points in the second half, before rallying to tie the game in the closing seconds. A pair of free throws by John Fletcher knotted the contest at 76-76 with 10.7 seconds to play. Hunter drew a foul on the ensuing Choctaws possession and missed his first attempt from the foul line. His second attempt was good, giving the visitors the lead.

The Lions quickly inbounded the ball and raced up court. Mississippi College did not allow a drive to the basket, forcing a rushed three-point attempt by Jeff Hodge at the buzzer. The junior's shot was just short, leaving him with a season-high 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor.

Hodge finished the game 6-of-13 from three-point range, but no other UNA player made more than one long-range basket. As a team the Lions connected on just 8-of-34 three-pointers.

North Alabama trailed 42-28 at the half after shooting 24.3 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play. The start of the second half was even worse for the Lions, who missed seven of their first nine shots from the floor and committed five turnovers in the first nine minutes of the second half. A three-pointer by Antonio Johnson gave the Choctaws a 60-39 lead with 11:26 remaining.

UNA used a balanced scoring attack to rally. A pair of three-pointers by Hodge was followed by consecutive baskets by Bilal Richardson. Fletcher then converted a three-point play at the 4:46 mark to make the score 65-61.

After Mississippi College stretched the lead back to eight with 2:49 remaining, the Lions made one final push. Hodge drove to the basket, then connected on a three-pointer following a MC turnover to make it 72-69 with 2:40 left. After another Choctaw turnover, a basket by Fletcher made it a one-point game.

The visitors added two free throws before another try by Hodge tied the game with 59 seconds to play. UNA had its first chance to take the lead after Stacey Mack hit one of two free throws in the final minute to give Mississippi College a 75-74 lead. The Lions, however, missed a three-point attempt and MC rebounded before adding a free throw to set up the final sequence with Fletcher's foul shots with 10.7 seconds to go.

Griffin finished with 13 points while Fletcher and Richardson had 12 points each for the Lions. Johnson finished with a game-high 24 points to lead Mississippi College (7-13 overall, 6-12 GSC). Despite the loss, the Lions still clinched a spot in the upcoming GSC Tournament.

UNA will host Delta State on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
