A three-point basket by Smith gave UNA a 51-30 lead with 1:19 remaining in the first half and the Lions took a 53-33 lead into the break. Shorter, however, outscored UNA 52-43 over the final 20 minutes of play. The Hawks scored the first two baskets of the second half and held UNA without a field goal until the 16:21 mark.

After North Alabama stretched the lead back to 20 points midway through the half, Shorter made one more push. A free throw by the Hawks capped a 22-11 run and made the score 79-70 with 4:57 remaining. UNA responded with five straight points, getting a jumper by Jeff Hodge and a basket and free throw by Sharwyn McGee. The lead remained double digits the rest of the way.
