SOFTBALL LIONS DOWN TRUMAN STATE, MONTEVALLO

MONTEVALLO – After a 7-5 walk-off victory over Truman State early in the day, the University of North Alabama softball team closed out play at the Falcon Frenzy with an 11-5 win over host Montevallo on Saturday. With the two wins, UNA improves to 8-2 on the year, including six straight victories.

In the opener, a three-run home run by Reagan Tittle in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Lions the come-from-behind win. UNA has now won five games this season during its last at-bat, including four walk-offs.

Against the Bulldogs, UNA battled back after trailing 4-0 at the end of the first inning and 5-1 after two innings. Freshman Marissa Honeycutt (1-0) came on in relief to get the win. She allowed one hit over six innings in relief of starter Raven Cole.

After a four-run top of the first inning gave Truman State the early lead, North Alabama answered in the bottom of the frame. An RBI-single by Anna Gayle Norris gave North Alabama its first run.

The Bulldogs regained the four-run lead with a single run in the top of the second inning and maintained the 5-1 lead until the bottom of the third. Back-to-back home runs by Norris and Mackenzie Roberts cut the lead to 5-4. Norris' homer was a two-run shot that also scored Hannah Shollenberger from first base.

The Lions got runners on base in the next three innings but could not score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Norris drew a lead-off walk and Sabrina Gilliam got an infield single to put runners and first and third with one out. Following the second out, Tittle came to the plate 0-for-2 on the day. With a 2-2 count she cleared the left field fence for the walk-off victory.

Norris finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI. Shollenberger and Madison Daniel each went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Against Montevallo, all the scoring in the game came in the first four innings. Norris got the offense going with a grand slam in the top of the first inning as the Lions took the early lead and never gave it up.

An RBI-triple by Daniel gave the Lions a 5-0 lead before Montevallo responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to 5-4. In the top of the third, UNA used a two-out rally to plate two runs. Gilliam reached base with a double before a two-run homer by Shelby Woodard gave the Lions a 7-4 lead.

A four-run fourth inning put the game out of reach for North Alabama. A two-run single by Mackenzie Roberts and a pair of RBI-singles by Gilliam and Tittle made the score 11-4. The Falcons plated a single run in the bottom of the frame but could get no closer.

Hillary Carpenter (3-1) picked up the complete-game victory in the circle. She scattered seven hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.

At the plate, Woodard was 3-for-3 with a trio of RBI. Tittle, Gilliam and Daniel added two hits each for the Lions. Norris finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate with two homers and seven RBI.

UNA will now turn its attention to its 2017 home opener on Tuesday. The Lions will play two games against Southern Indiana. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the UNA Softball Complex.
