WEST FLORIDA DOWNS UNA WOMEN 75-51

FLORENCE – No. 23 West Florida got off to fast starts at the beginning of each half in a 75-51 Gulf South Conference win over the University of North Alabama women's basketball team Thursday evening at Flowers Hall. With the win, the Argonauts maintained first place in the GSC while UNA falls to 17-8 overall and 11-8 in league games. The loss, along with West Georgia's win on the same night also moved the Lions to fifth place in the conference standings.

UNA struggled from three-point range throughout the game. The Lions made just 4-of-28 from long range, including an 0-for-11 showing in the second half.

West Florida opened the game on a 9-0 run, holding UNA scoreless for the first 3:45 of playing time. Emma Wallen ended the drought with a three-pointer from the right wing. The Lions, however, trailed by 11 at the end of the opening period.

North Alabama got within a single point early in the second quarter after opening the period on a 10-0 run. A transition basket by KeKe Gunter made the score 19-18 with 8:01 remaining. The Argos, however, responded with 11 straight points to regain control. A pair of free throws by UWF's Shami Goodman gave the visitors a 35-28 lead at the break.

The Argonauts used another scoring run to open the third quarter. UNA had three turnovers and missed its first four shots from the floor as West Florida used an 11-0 spurt to build a 48-30 lead. The Lions would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Gunter and Ivy Wallen led UNA with 12 points each. Michaela DeKilder added 13 rebounds for the Lions. Wallen, who was 5-of-5 from the free throw line, set a new school record with 149 made free throws on the year. She breaks LaConger Pegues' previous mark of 148, set during the 1994-95 campaign.

UWF (20-5 overall, 15-4 GSC) was led by Toni Brewer's 21 points and 12 rebounds. The Argonauts held a 48-37 rebounding advantage and had three players reach double digit rebound totals.

UNA will host Valdosta State on Saturday in the final home game of the regular season. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
