MISSISSIPPI COLLEGE SWEEPS UNA SOFTBALL

CLINTON, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team was held to a single run over two games in a pair of Gulf South Conference losses at Mississippi College on Saturday. The 8-1, 1-0 defeats leave UNA with a 23-14 overall record, including a 13-10 mark in GSC play.

In the opener, the Choctaws scored six unanswered runs to pull away for the win. Mississippi College led 2-1 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to put the game out of reach. The home team also took advantage of three UNA errors and scored a total of five unearned runs.

Trailing 2-0, the Lions were able to cut into the deficit with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. An RBI-single by McKenna Ray scored Reagan Tittle from second base.

Mississippi College responded in the bottom of the inning by sending eight batters to the plate. The Choctaws scored four runs off two hits, while getting an error, two walks and a wild pitch. The Lions got only one hit the rest of the way.

Hillary Carpenter (12-6) took the pitching loss. She allowed eight runs off six hits in 4.1 innings of work. Sabrina Gillum was 2-for-4 at the plate. Jordan Holifield improved to 4-0 on the year with the win in the circle for Mississippi College.

In the second game, MC pitcher Adrianna Morgan outlasted Raven Cole for a 1-0 victory. UNA out-hit the Choctaws 8-5 but could never get a runner past second base.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh, the Lions had runners at first and second with one out. A popup and a groundout, however, ended the game.

Cole fell to 7-6 with the loss. She allowed a single run in the bottom of the fourth inning while striking out five and walking nine on the day. Bailey Nelson went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game set for 2 p.m.
