LIONS TOP UNION 82-78

FLORENCE – Sharwyn McGee led six North Alabama players in double figures with 17 points as the UNA men's basketball team outlasted Union 82-78 Saturday evening at Flowers Hall. The win snaps a three-game skid for the Lions, who improve to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in Gulf South Conference play.

McGee, who added nine rebounds on the night, scored on a putback with 2:41 remaining to break a 76-76 tie and give UNA the lead for good. He was also fouled on the play and added a free throw to give the Lions a 79-76 lead.

Union connected on two free throws to pull to within a single point before a three-point basket by Jeff Hodge with 14.5 seconds remaining gave UNA a four-point lead. The Bulldogs missed a trey on their ensuing possession to seal the win.

Hodge and Kendarius Smith added 14 points each for the Lions, with Hodge getting all of his points in the second half. Kendall Stafford tossed in 12 points while Adrian Smith had 11 points and Trenton Clayton scored 10 points to round out the top scorers for UNA.

North Alabama led by as many as 18 early in the game before the Bulldogs closed the gap. A basket by Adrian Smith made the score 31-13 with 8:36 remaining in the first half. Union outscored UNA 27-14 to enter the half trailing 45-40.

Union opened the second half on an 8-2 run to grab its first lead of the game. A three-pointer with 17:31 remaining gave the visitors a 48-47 lead. Hodge, however, answered with the first of his three second-half three-pointers. The senior from Birmingham scored 11 of UNA's next 12 points as the Lions took a 59-51 lead at the 14:06 mark.

North Alabama led by 11 midway through the second half when the Bulldogs made one last push. An 18-5 run gave Union a 71-69 lead with 6:07 remaining. A basket by Stafford tied the game and neither team led by more than three until the trey by Hodge in the closing seconds.

Charlie Wilson scored a game-high 24 points to lead Union (8-6 overall, 2-4 GSC).

UNA will host Christian Brothers on Jan. 9. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
