NEWARK, N.J. – The University of North Alabama women's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie with NJIT in its regular-season finale and earned a berth in the 2018 ASUN Conference Tournament in the process.
UNA, 9-8-1 overall, finished 3-4-1 in ASUN play in its first season of Division I and earned the sixth and final spot in the upcoming league tournament with 10 points in conference play. The Lions will play Kennesaw State in the opening round back at NJIT on Friday, October 26. The winner will then meet NJIT in the semifinals on Sunday, October 28. Lipscomb is hosting the other half of the bracket and will play the winner of the FGCU-Liberty match. The championship match will be at a campus site of the highest remaining seed on November 3.
In the tie with NJIT, the Lions and Highlanders battled to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods. It was UNA's first overtime match and first tie of the season.
NJIT out-shot UNA 18 to 11 in the match and had 11 shots on goal, all saved by North Alabama goalkeeper
Shelby Thornton. Thornton had three saves in overtime. The Lions had just four shots on goal.
North Alabama was shutout in the third straight match and the Lions have scored just two goals in their last seven outings.
