LIONS DOWN MARTIN METHODIST 80-68

FLORENCE – After leading by as many as 18 in the first half, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team held off Martin Methodist over the final 20 minutes to record an 80-68 win Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. Jamari Blackmon and Kendarius Smith scored 19 points each as the Lions improved to 2-3 on the season.

UNA took a 36-21 lead into the half before the Redhawks began to rally. After a basket by Smith gave the Lions a 17-point lead, North Alabama went scoreless for 4:49 while the visitors slowly chipped away at the deficit. A bucket MMC's Adrian Smith made the score 38-36 with 15:12 remaining.

Blackmon, however, responded for the Lions with eight straight points. The freshman converted a pair of three-point plays and added two more free throws to stretch the lead to 10. After a free throw by the Redhawks, Blackmon then connected from three-point range to push the lead to 49-37 at the 12:42 mark.

North Alabama led by as many as 18 before Martin Methodist made one last push. After two free throws by Christian Agnew gave UNA a 61-43 lead, the Redhawks again closed the gap to single digits. A 15-5 run made the score 70-62 with 2:56 to play, but the visitors could get no closer. Smith scored nine points down the stretch to help seal the win.

Agnew added 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds on the night. He also had three steals. Four different players added at least two assists for the Lions.

UNA will play at Troy at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Lions will then play at Toledo on Nov. 28 before returning home on Dec. 1 to host Jacksonville State.
