UNA MEN FALL AT SAMFORD

BIRMINGHAM – Samford shot 62.3 percent from the floor in a 91-74 victory over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Tuesday evening in the season-opener for both teams. With the loss, UNA starts its first NCAA Division I season with an 0-1 record.
 
Samford (1-0) used a 25-8 run midway through the first half to take control. After a basket by Cameron Diggs and two free throws by Payton Youngblood gave UNA an early 4-0 lead, the two teams went back and forth with the Bulldogs grabbing a 19-15 lead at the 12:54 mark. North Alabama struggled to score from that point while Samford hit 11 of its next 14 shots from the floor.
 
A basket by Josh Sharkey capped the run and gave Samford a 44-23 lead with 4:12 remaining in the first half. North Alabama was 3-for-14 during the stretch with a pair of turnovers. Another jumper in the closing seconds gave the Bulldogs a 49-30 lead at the break. Samford shot 70 percent (21-of-30) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes of play.
 
In the second half, the home team led by as many as 33 points. A basket by Kevion Nolan made the score 84-51 with 5:37 remaining. From there, UNA was able to close the game on a 23-7 spurt.
 
For the game, Samford held a 46-30 rebounding advantage.
 
Jamari Blackmon led UNA with 17 points. The freshman from Hoover hit a trio of three-point baskets and was 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Kendall Stafford and Christian Agnew added 12 points each for the Lions, who shot 33.3 percent for the game with 12 three-pointers.
 
Myron Gordon led Samford with a game-high 19 points on the night.
 
UNA will host Blue Mountain Saturday for its home opener. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flower Hall.
