UAB HOLDS OFF LIONS 73-67

BIRMINGHAM – UAB built a double-digit lead in the second half and held off a rally by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to post a 73-67 home victory Tuesday evening at Bartow Arena in Birmingham. The loss leaves UNA with a 2-7 record on the season.

After taking a 35-31 lead into the break, UAB stretched its lead to 11 points midway through the second half. A putback by the Blazers capped an 11-4 run and gave the home team a 46-35 lead with 16:26 remaining.

UNA, however, was able answer. Four different players scored during a 10-2 run for the Lions. A three-point basket by Kendall Stafford made the score 48-45 at the 12:32 mark.

After UAB responded to push the lead back to 10 points, the Lions made one more push to get within a single possession. Kendarius Smith hit a pair of three-pointers to start an 11-4 run. Jamari Blackmon connected on a basket and free throw to cut the lead to 64-61 lead with 3:26 to play.

The Blazers answered with a basket, then followed a defensive stop with a three-pointer to go ahead 69-61. UNA would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.

Rebounding proved to be a key factor for the Blazers. UAB held a 39-29 advantage on the boards, including 14 on the offensive end of the floor. The Blazers scored 22 second-chance points on the night and outscored the Lions 42-26 in the paint.

In the first half, UNA raced out to a 16-7 lead. A basket by Smith at the 13:44 mark gave the Lions the early nine-point advantage. UAB responded with an 8-0 to get back in the game. A basket with 7:48 remaining gave the Blazers their first lead of the game at 21-19.

Smith led all scorers on the night with 19 points. The senior from Camden, Miss., was 6-of-11 from the floor, including four three-point baskets. Stafford hit five three-pointers and added 18 points for North Alabama. Blackmon rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 17 points on the night.

Jalen Perry led UAB (6-2) with 17 points for the game.
