NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of North Alabama women's soccer unbeaten streak ended at five Sunday as the Lions dropped a 4-0 decision on the road at Vanderbilt.
In its first-ever soccer match-up against a Southeastern Conference school, UNA surrendered two early goals in the first 12 minutes of the match and then allowed two final goals on penalty kicks in the final 15 minutes of the match.
North Alabama opened its first season as an NCAA Division I member with five consecutive wins in which the Lions allowed just three total goals. Vanderbilt surpassed that total Sunday, out-shooting UNA 18-3. The Lions entered the match tied for the Division I national lead in goals scored with 19. Â
Vandy used a corner kick to take the early lead as Madison Elwell floated a ball across the front of the net to Haley Hopkins for the first goal of the math just 3:40 into play. It was Hopkins third goal of the season.
Grace Jackson then scored at the 11:52 mark to make it 2-0.
The match was scoreless for the next 63 minutes until Kaylann Boyd scored on a penalty kick at 75:29 and Hopkins added her second goal of the match on a PK at the 87:10 mark.
Despite allowing four goals, UNA goalkeeper
Shelby Thornton had a straing match in-goal, recording five saves.
With the win, Vanderbilt improved to 5-1 on the year with its fifth straight win.
North Alabama will return to the pitch on Friday, September 7 when the Lions host Abilene Christian at 7 p.m. at 7 p.m. at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex.
