LIONS KNOCK OFF NJIT 61-55

FLORENCE – A trio of freshmen reached double figures for the University of North Alabama men's basketball team as the Lions defeated NJIT 61-55 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The second straight win in ASUN Conference play gives UNA a 5-13 overall record and 2-1 mark in league play.

The Highlanders (13-4 overall, 1-1 ASUN) entered the game in first place in the ASUN standings and were also ranked No. 23 in the latest CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll.

Neither team led by more than four points in the first half. A three-point basket by Kendarius Smith in the final minute gave UNA a 26-23 lead at the break.

The second half featured scoring runs by both teams. Kendall Stafford scored all seven of his points during a four-minute span as the Lions grabbed a 36-28 lead with 15:42 remaining. NJIT answered with seven straight points of its own.

The Highlanders were able to pull to within a single point on three different occasions, and also tied the game at 40-40 at the 10:48 mark. UNA, however, answered each time. After NJIT tied the game at 40, Jamari Blackmon hit two free throws to start an 11-0 run. A basket by Christian Agnew capped the run and gave the Lions a 51-40 lead with 6:10 to play.

The visitors would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Blackmon, a freshman from Hoover, and Smith led UNA with 16 points each. Fellow freshmen Agnew and Emanuel Littles added 14 points and 11 rebounds respectively for the Lions. NJIT was led by San Antonio Brinson's 16 points on the day.

UNA will play its next ASUN game at Jacksonville on Jan. 16. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. (Central) on the Dolphins' home floor in Jacksonville, Fla.
