SOUTH DAKOTA STATE OUTLASTS LIONS IN SECOND HALF

BROOKINGS, S.D., – South Dakota State shot 63.2 percent in the second half to overcome a one-point deficit at the break to post a 78-73 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Tuesday evening at Frost Arena in Brookings S.D.
With the loss, UNA falls to 2-3 on the season.
 
The Lions got a career-high 26 points by Jamari Blackmon, but the Jackrabbits had four players in double figures and connected on 12-of-19 shots over the final 20 minutes, including five three-pointers.
 
South Dakota State hit its first three shots of the second half to grab the lead. UNA trailed 52-51 with 11:03 remaining after a jumper by Blackmon. The Lions, however, would not score for the next 4:36 while SDSU went on a 9-0 run to stretch the lead to double digits.
 
A basket by Peyton Youngblood at the 6:27 stopped the run, but the Jackrabbits continued to knock down shots. The home team led 70-61 with 2:18 remaining when the Lions made one last push. UNA got a layup from C.J. Brim and a steal-and-score from James Anderson to cut the deficit to five.
 
SDSU answered with two free throws, then connected on a three-point shot in the final minute to put the game out of reach.
 
Blackmon finished the game 9-of-17 from the floor, including a 4-for-8 showing from three-point range. Anderson also had a career-high with 16 points, all coming in the second half. Youngblood rounded out the top scorers for North Alabama with 11 points.
 
South Dakota State (4-2) was led by Brandon Key's 18 points. The Jackrabbits held a commanding 40-24 rebounding advantage and was also able to get to the free throw line 21 more times than the Lions. SDSU went 25-of-33 from the foul line while UNA was 9-of-12 on the night.
 
The two teams traded mini runs in the first half that featured four ties and seven lead changes. Each team held a six-point lead at one point. A putback by Blackmon in the closing seconds gave North Alabama the 33-32 lead at the break.
 
UNA will play at Louisiana Tech on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. on the LaTech campus in Ruston, La.
