SOFTBALL LIONS TOP PORTLAND STATE 2-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – Alex Brown's two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning provided the winning runs as the University of North Alabama softball team rallied for a 2-1 win over Portland State Friday at the Tennessee State Tiger Classic.
The walk-off hit gave UNA a 9-3 record on the season.

With the tournament running more than two hours behind schedule and temperatures hovering in the upper 30s, the Lions' late game against East Tennessee State was cancelled.

Against Portland State, UNA settled into a pitcher's duel with Vikings ace Alyssa Burk. The Lions held a 7-4 advantage in hits, but trailed 1-0 heading into the final frame after leaving nine runners on base.

Meleah Hargett drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning. She moved to second on Jessie Brown's bunt single down the third base line. The runners moved to second and third on Veronica Westfall's sacrifice bunt to bring (Alex) Brown to the plate.

The senior from Pontotoc, Miss., hit the first pitch into the left center gap to score both runs and give UNA the victory.

Megan Garst came on in relief to get the pitching victory. She tossed the final 3.1 innings without allowing a hit, striking out seven batters to improve to 4-1 on the season. Sidney Revels started the game in the circle and gave up one run off four hits in the first 3.2 innings.

Portland State got its lone run in the top of the fourth inning with a leadoff walk, a sacrifice bunt and an RBI-double. Burk finished the game with two runs off seven hits with six strikeouts. She walked three batters in 6.1 innings of work.

Jessie Brown was the only UNA player with multiple hits. The freshman from Brentwood, Tenn., was 2-for-3 on the day.

UNA will remain in Nashville for two games on Saturday. The Lions will take on Marist at 2 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. game against host Tennessee State.
