UNA SOFTBALL DOWNS MARIST 9-0 AT TSU CLASSIC

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored nine runs off 12 hits Saturday during a 9-0 win over Marist at the Tennessee State Tiger Classic. For a second straight day, the late games were canceled after falling behind schedule, leaving the Lions with a 10-3 record on the year.
 
Against Marist, UNA took control with a six-run fourth inning. The Lions sent 10 batters to the plate in the frame and did all of the damage after recording two quick outs.
 
Back-to-back doubles by Chloe Kirkland and Harley Stokes started the scoring spree for the Lions. Mackenzie Roberts singled home the second run to give UNA a 2-0 lead. Infield singles by Danielle de Ruiter and Meleah Hargett then chased Marist starter Nicole Teague from the circle.
 
Katie Eakes drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score 3-0 before Veronica Westfall cleared all the runners with a three-run double to left field.
 
UNA added three runs in the top of the seventh to wrap up the scoring. The Lions again loaded the bases before Roberts singled up the middle to score two more runs. Micalyn White's sacrifice fly scored the final run from third base.
 
Roberts finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. Westfall, Kirkland and Stokes also added two hits each.
 
Megan Garst worked the first three scoreless innings in the circle. Michelle Moore (2-0) came on in relief to get the pitching victory. Jensen Strickland also pitched the final inning.
 
North Alabama will now turn its attention to its Division I home opener on Tuesday. The Lions will host a double-header against Tennessee Tech.  First pitch is set for noon at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Field.
