LIONS GET ASUN SOFTBALL SWEEP AT STETSON

DELAND, Fla., – Hannah Shollenberger was 4-for-7 with three RBI on the day as the University of North Alabama softball team recorded a double-header sweep over Stetson on Saturday. A 9-5 victory in the first game and a 2-0 win in the second gives UNA a 17-10 record on the season with a 3-2 mark in ASUN Conference play.
 
In the opener, the Lions exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning. UNA sent 14 batters to the plate in the frame to chase Stetson starter Jamie Tino from the circle.
 
Meleah Hargett, who was hit twice in the inning, scored the first run on a throwing error by the Hatters. Harley Stokes singled home the second run before a two-run double by Shollenberger made the score 4-0. With runners at second and third, Lexie Harper's two-out single up the middle gave the Lions a 6-0 lead.
 
The second time Hargett was hit, loaded the bases and forced a Stetson pitching change. With the bases still loaded, Alex Brown was hit to score another run. Harper also scored from third on a passed ball to give North Alabama the 8-0 lead.
 
Stetson was able to cut into the lead with five run in the bottom of the second inning. The Hatters took advantage of a pair of UNA errors in the frame. All five runs were unearned.
 
UNA added an unearned run of its own in the top of the fourth. Veroncia Westfall reached on an error and later scored on an RBI-single by Danielle de Ruiter.
 
Megan Garst picked up the win after working 6.2 innings. She allowed two hits and struck out six without issuing a walk to improve to 9-3 on the year.
 
At the plate, the Lions had 15 hits. Shollenberger went 3-for-4 while Harper was 3-for-5 in the opener. Hargett, Brown, Westfall and de Ruiter added two hits each.
 
In the second game, Sidney Revels pitched a five-hit shutout for UNA. The freshman from Bonifay, Fla., improved to 3-1 after working all seven innings.
 
North Alabama again struck first with a single run in the top of the first inning. A two-out double by Brown was followed by an RBI-single by Chloe Kirkland.
 
The lead was still 1-0 when Stetson put runners at first and second with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Revels, however, pitcher out of the jam with the shutout intact.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Lions added to their lead. Westfall singled and stole second before Shollenberger drove in her third run of the day with a single to left field. Five different players recorded one hit each for UNA in the second game.
 
The two teams will complete the three-game ASUN series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. (Central).
