LIONS OPEN SERIES WITH 3-2 WIN AT KENNESAW STATE

KENNESAW, Ga., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored three runs over the final two innings, then held off a late rally by Kennesaw State to grab a 3-2 road victory Friday evening in ASUN Conference play. The win opens a three-game series at KSU and gives the Lions a 19-16 overall record with a 5-8 mark in conference play.
 
After the two teams battled to a scoreless tie throughout the first five innings, UNA finally broke through with a single run in the top of the sixth. Meleah Hargett led off the frame with a single. She stole second base before Veronica Westfall's two-out single through the left side scored the game's first run.
 
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the seventh. Following a leadoff single by Hannah Shollenberger, pinch-runner Jessie Brown scored on a KSU throwing error. An RBI-single by Mackenzie Roberts then gave UNA a 3-0 lead.
 
Kennesaw State scored twice in the bottom of the inning and had the tying run in scoring position before UNA pitcher Megan Garst recorded the final out. The junior from Columbiana finished the game with seven strikeouts after scattering five hits to improve to 11-5 on the season. Neither of the Owls' two runs were earned.
 
At the plate, seven different North Alabama players collected one hit each.
 
The two teams are scheduled to play a double-header on Saturday. First pitch is slated for noon (Central) at Bailey Park on the KSU campus.
