SPLIT GIVES UNA SOFTBALL SERIES WIN OVER OWLS

KENNESAW, Ga., – After dropping a 7-4 decision at Kennesaw State, the University of North Alabama softball team recorded a 3-0 victory in the second game on Saturday to win the ASUN Conference series. UNA won the series opener 3-2 on Friday night and improves to 20-17 overall and 6-9 in league play following the split.

Megan Garst (12-5) recorded the pitching win for the Lions in the clinching game. It was the second complete-game victory of the series for the junior from Columbiana. For the weekend, she went 2-0, pitching 14 innings without yielding an earned run.

In the second game, Kennesaw State got consecutive hits to lead off the bottom of the first inning. Garst retired the next 10 batters, allowing one hit the rest of the way.

Offensively, UNA broke a scoreless tie with a single run in the top of the third inning. Meleah Hargett led off the frame with a single and reached second base on a KSU throwing error. She advanced to third on a wild pitch before Veronica Westfall drew a one-out walk to put runners at the corners. The two runners then executed a double steal to give the Lions the early lead.

Madison Daniel led off the fifth inning with a double to right center. She was sacrificed to third base before an RBI-single up the middle by Harley Stokes gave UNA a 2-0 lead.

The Lions took advantage of a pair of KSU errors in the top of the seventh inning to add to the lead. After Daniel reached on a fielding error, she was sacrificed to second base. The junior from Florence then stole third base and came home on another KSU throwing error on the play.

At the plate, four UNA players recorded one hit each as Garst out-dueled Kennesaw State ace Hailey Andrews.

Kennesaw State scored seven runs in the first three innings before holding off a late UNA rally in the opener.

Alex Brown drew a two-out walk and later scored on an error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Owls, however, responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, four in the second and another in the third to take a 7-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, UNA got a two-out single by Danielle de Ruiter. Pinch runner Jessie Brown reach third base before scoring on a passed ball to make the score 7-2. The Lions loaded the bases with one out in the fifth inning before Hannah Shollenberger was hit by a pitcher to drive in one run and de Ruiter's sacrifice fly scored another.

Five different UNA players had one hit each. Sidney Revels (3-4) started and took the pitching loss for the Lions. Laken Distefaon and Jensen Strickland also saw action in the circle.

UNA will play a single game at Murray State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
