FGCU TAKES TWO GAMES FROM UNA SOFTBALL

FLORENCE – Florida Gulf Coast got a 9-1 victory in the opener and a 1-0 win in the nightcap to pick up a ASUN Conference softball sweep at North Alabama on Saturday. The two losses leave the Lions with a 17-13 overall record and a 3-5 mark in league play.

FGCU scored all nine runs after the fifth inning in the first game before holding off the Lions in a pitching duel in the second. The UNA offense was held to one run off 10 hits on the day and left 14 runners on base.

In the opener, UNA held a 1-0 lead throughout most of the contest before the Eagles broke open the close game late.

Meleah Hargett singled to reach base before an RBI-single by Veronica Westfall gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained the same until FGCU sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the fifth inning.

Florida Gulf Coast started the frame with a walk and an infield single to chase UNA starter Sidney Revels from the circle. The Eagles then added four runs off three hits to grab a 4-1 lead. A three-run sixth inning pushed the lead to 7-1. FGCU put together three straight hits, including an RBI-triple and a two-run home run to take control.

Another two-run homer in the top of the seventh wrapped up the scoring for the Eagles.

Revels (3-2) got the pitching loss after starting the game and later returning to pitch the final 1.2 innings. She totaled 5.2 innings on the day with four runs off six hits and three strikeouts. At the plate, Westfall was 2-for-3 in the opener.

The second game featured a pitching duel between UNA's Megan Garst and a pair of FGCU pitchers. Despite a three-hit effort and a career-high 13 strikeouts, Garst took the loss to fall to 9-4 on the season.

FGCU's Farley Callaghan led off the top of the sixth inning with a solo home run to represent the only run of the game.

UNA loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh before the Eagles' Marrisa Mesiemore recorded a strikeout to end the game. Mesiemore and Riley Randolph each had two outings in the second game, combining on a three-hit shutout. Mesiemore recorded the pitching victory in both contests.

Westfall, Alex Brown and Chloe Kirkland each singled to represent UNA's three hits in the nightcap.

The two teams will concluded the three-game ASUN series with a single game Sunday at noon.
