SOFTBALL LIONS DROP 3-2 DECISION TO FGCU

FLORENCE – A two-run home run in the top of the second inning and an unearned run in the top of the seventh was enough offense for Florida Gulf Coast to come away with a 3-2 victory at North Alabama Sunday in the final game of an ASUN Conference softball series. The win completed the three-game sweep for FGCUas UNA fell to 17-14 overall and 3-6 in league play.

For the second straight game, the Lions stranded the tying and go-ahead runners on base in the bottom of the seventh inning.  After giving up a pinch-hit single by Danielle de Ruiter to lead off the inning and a walk to Alex Brown, FGCU pitcher Marrisa Mesiemore (7-4) recorded three straight outs to get out of the jam. The sophomore picked up all three pitching victories on the weekend.

Florida Gulf Coast took a 2-0 lead with a two-run home run by Farley Callaghan in the top of the second inning. The score remained the same until the Lions answered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth.

UNA had runners at second and third with two outs when pinch hitter Katie Eakes reached on an FGCU fielding error. Both runners scored to tie the game.

Florida Gulf Coast took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning. After a leadoff double, by Callaghan, pinch runner Ashley Hayes stole third base before coming home on an UNA error to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

Megan Garst (9-5) was stuck with the pitching loss after allowing the unearned run. She worked the final three innings, allowing one hit with a strikeout and a walk. Laken Distefano started and pitched the first four innings, scattering two runs off two hits with three strikeouts.

At the plate, UNA held a 6-3 advantage in hits. The Lions, however, continued to struggle with stranding runners, leaving eight on base on the day. Six different UNA players had one hit each.

UNA will travel to Alabama A&M for a non-conference double-header on Tuesday. First pitch is set for Noon on the A&M campus in Huntsville.
