LIONS GRIND OUT 54-51 WIN OVER NORTH FLORIDA TO OPEN ASUN PLAY

FLORENCE – Emma Wallen scored a game-high 19 points and the University of North Alabama women's basketball team overcame 20 turnovers and a season-low 29 percent shooting percentage to post a 54-51 home win over North Florida Saturday afternoon in the ASUN Conference opener. With the win UNA improves to 10-3 on the season with a 1-0 mark in league play. The Lions will host Jacksonville Monday night.

On Saturday, the two teams combined for 39 turnovers as neither team could find much offensive rhythm. UNF made just 20-of-66 (30.3 percent) of its shots from the floor, but trailed only 20-18 at the break.

UNA did not hit a two-point basket in the opening half. The Lions were 6-of-18 from three-point range, but 0-for-11 from inside the arc. Wallen hit four treys in the first half to keep North Alabama ahead. Her three-pointer with 3:34 remaining in the second quarter gave the Lions a 20-18 lead. Neither team scored again.

Kenysha Coulson gave UNA its first two-point field goal with a runner early in the third quarter. The Lions led by as many as five points three different times in the period, but could never extend the lead. North Florida trailed 33-28 at the 3:20 mark before closing the quarter on a 6-0 run to grab its first lead of the second half.

North Alabama opened the fourth quarter with seven straight points. Baskets by Brittany Panetti and Ansley Eubank sandwiched another three-pointer by Wallen as the Lions grabbed a 40-34 lead. The Lions led by as many as seven in the final period, but could never pull away.

The Ospreys rallied to tie the game at 43-43, and later took the lead with consecutive baskets to go ahead 49-48 with 2:19 remaining. The lead, however, changed hands three more times down the stretch. A jumper by Wallen was followed by layup by UNF's Jazz Bond. Coulson, however, gave UNA the lead for good with two free throws at the 1:06 mark.

UNA got a defensive stop and a turnover on the next two Ospreys possessions and Ivy Wallen connected on a pair of free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win.

Emma Wallen finished the game 5-of-14 from three-point range. Ivy Wallen added 14 points on the day to up her career total to 1,507. She remains in third place on the program's all-time scoring list, trailing second-place Amber Rutherford by 102 points.
