FLORENCE – Olivia Noah recorded a career-high 26 points and Ivy Wallen just missed a triple-double as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team knocked off Jacksonville 76-65 Monday evening at Flowers Hall. The win gives the Lions an 11-3 overall record with a 2-0 mark in ASUN Conference play.
Noah, a junior from Cypress, Texas, scored 18 points in the second half as the Lions began to pull away. She finished the night 8-of-13 from the floor with four three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 showing at the free throw line.
UNA used a dominant third quarter to take control. The Lions took a 39-35 lead into the half before outscoring the visitors 21-12 in the third frame. After briefly cutting the lead to 39-37, Jacksonville made just one field goal during a 6:44 stretch. Wallen connected on a basket and free throw to give the Lions a 52-41 lead with 3:29 remaining. Jaida Bond hit a trey as time expired to put North Alabama ahead 60-47 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Dolphins outscored UNA 18-16 in the final period, but could do little to slow down Noah, who hit two more three-pointers and had 12 points in the quarter.
Jacksonville made one final push in the closing minutes. After scoring five straight points to cut the deficit to single digits, the Dolphins trailed 74-65 and had possession after forcing a UNA turnover. Kenysha Coulson then grabbed a defensive rebound and found Noah, who drew a foul and hit both free throws to seal the win.
Bond added 17 points for the Lions. For the game, UNA's bench provided 46 points. Wallen finished with 11 points, 12 assists and nine rebounds. She pushed her season assist total to 107 after reached double figures in seven games on the year.
Destiney Marshall led Jacksonville (8-6 overall, 0-1 ASUN) with 25 points.
After trailing by as many as five in the first quarter, UNA used a 13-3 run to take the lead for good. Emma Wallen hit two treys during the spurt and Noah added a three-pointer and two free throws. The foul shots gave the Lions a 16-11 lead. North Alabama led 19-15 at the end of the opening period.
UNA will play at Lipscomb on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Allen Arena on the LU campus in Nashville.
