LIONS PULL AWAY FROM FREED-HARDEMAN FOR 82-56 WIN

FLORENCE – Mervin James and Emanuel Littles each recorded double-doubles and the University of North Alabama men's basketball team used a dominant second half to pull away from Freed-Hardeman 82-56 Sunday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win gives UNA a 4-2 record on the season.

After the Lions took a 38-36 lead into the break, UNA outscored the visitors 44-20 over the final 20 minutes. North Alabama held a 52-31 rebounding advantage and scored 16 second-chance points, including a 44-30 advantage in points in the paint.

A Freed-Hardeman basket early in the second half tied the game. The visiting Lions, however, would not score from the floor again for the next 6:53 of playing time.

James, who led all scorers with 20 points, started a 14-1 run with a dunk and scored six points during the spree. A basket by Detalian Brown gave the Lions a 52-39 lead with 14:09 remaining.

The lead only grew from there as Freed-Hardeman was never able to get within single digits. After closing the gap to 56-46 midway through the second half, the visitors missed their next three shots from the floor and had four turnovers during a 13-0 North Alabama spurt.

A transition basket by Aleksa Matic made the score 69-46 at the 7:40 mark. The largest lead of the night came with 4:04 remaining when a steal by Payton Youngblood led to a fast break score by Isaas Chatman to give the Lions a 78-50 lead.

James added 11 rebounds on the day for his second double-double of the season. After getting a career-high 19 rebounds against Crowley's Ridge on Thursday, Littles added 14 points and 17 boards against Freed-Hardeman for his 11th career double-double and third of the season.

Jamari Blackmon also connected on a trio of three-point baskets and finished with 14 points. Youngblood rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 11 points.

Jeremiah Alexander lead Freed-Hardeman (7-2) with 18 points.

UNA will host Jackson State on Tuesday. Tip-off is set for noon at Flowers Hall.
