Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UNA MEN 2-0 AFTER 107-40 ROUT OF CARVER

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team shot 55.9 percent from the floor, including a 22-for-32 performance in the second half in a 107-40 rout of Carver Bible College Sunday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the win, UNA improves to 2-0 on the season.

For the second straight game, five players reached double figures in scoring. After missing the season-opener, Mervin James came off the bench to score a game-high 25 points. The sophomore from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, was one of four UNA players to record a career-high on the day.

Payton Youngblood was 5-for-8 from three-point range and added 22 points while freshmen Will Soucie and Detalian Brown each scored 12 points to represent the highest total of their young careers.

North Alabama wasted little time taking control, opening the game on a 13-3 run. After the Cougars (0-10) got within eight points at 16-8, Brown started a 12-0 run for the Lions with a three-point basket from the right wing. A transition basket by Soucie capped the run and gave the home team a 28-8 advantage with 10:47 remaining in the first half.

Carver would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way. With the Lions leading 36-19 at the 4:35 mark, UNA closed the half on an 11-3 run. A trey by James in the final minute of play made the score 47-22 at the half.

North Alabama extended the lead over the final 20 minutes of play, outscoring the Cougars 60-18. The Lions flirted with the school record for largest margin of victory (70 points), leading 107-38 with possession in the final minute. A missed jumper, however, led to a fast break basket by Carver at the other end of the court to represent the final score.

UNA shot 68.8 percent from the floor in the second half and finished the game 15-for-33 from three-point range. The Lions also had 18 assists on the day and held a commanding 42-29 rebounding advantage. The final score represented the first time North Alabama has reached the century mark under head coach Tony Pujol.

Jamari Blackmon added 15 points for the Lions while Aleksa Matic also reached double figures with 10 points.

UNA will return to action on Thursday, Dec. 10, at home against Troy. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
