NORTH FLORIDA DOWNS LIONS 80-67

JACKSONVILLE, Fla., – North Florida shot 60 percent from the floor in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead over the final 20 minutes in an 80-67 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Saturday at the UNF Arena. The losses leaves UNA with a 10-16 record, but the Lions still managed to clinch a berth in the upcoming ASUN Conference Tournament because of Kennesaw State's loss on the same day.
 
With three regular-season games remaining, the Lions remain in sixth place in the ASUN standings with a 5-8 league record. UNA hosts Kennesaw State on Thursday, Feb. 20.
 
On Saturday, North Florida was 18-of-30 from the floor in the first half. A three-point basket at the buzzer gave the home team a 46-34 lead.
 
UNA had a better defensive showing in the second half but could not score enough to make a run. The Lions trailed by 17 midway through the period before North Alabama scored six straight points to make the score 62-51 with 10:40 remaining. The Lions would get no closer.
 
A three-point basket by Jamari Blackmon made the score 70-58 at the 3:51 mark. UNF responded with a basket on the ensuing possession, then hit 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch. A three-pointer with 1:07 remaining sealed the win.
 
Mervin James finished with a career-high 23 points for UNA. The freshman from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, added 10 rebounds for his second career double-double. C.J. Brim added 14 points while Emanuel Littles pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
Garrett Sams led North Florida (18-10 overall, 11-2 ASUN) with 25 points.
 
Tip-off against Kennesaw State is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Flowers Hall.
