UNA SOFTBALL DROPS TWO GAMES AT BULLDOG CLASSIC

STARKVILLE, Miss., – A pair of losses on the second day of the Mississippi State Bulldog Kickoff Classic on Saturday sent the University of North Alabama softball team in the consolation game. After falling to Tulsa 1-0 in pool play, the Lions lost a 9-1 decision to the host Bulldogs in bracket play. UNA (5-3) will face Tulsa Sunday at 11 a.m. at Nusz Park on the MSU campus.

In the early game on Saturday, Tulsa starting pitcher Samantha Pochop outdueled UNA's Megan Garst in the 1-0 victory. The two pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts.

UNA was held to a single hit in the second straight shutout loss. Lexie Harper reached first on an infield single in the bottom of the fourth inning. She was sacrificed to second before being stranded. The Lions struck out 14 times.

The Golden Hurricane scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning to represent the game's lone score. After reaching base on an error, Tulsa recorded back-to-back hits to drive the run home.

Garst (2-2) finished the game with eight strikeouts and one walk in seven innings of work.

In the late game, Mississippi State grabbed early momentum with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs (8-1) added four runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth to evoke the eight-run mercy rule.

UNA used four different pitchers, but could do little to slow down the MSU bats that finished with 12 hits, including three home runs. Michelle Moore (0-1) took the loss after starting the game and allowing three runs off four hits in the first inning.

At the plate, the Lions were held to a single hit that came in the top of the third inning. Freshman Emma Latham recorded her first career hit with a solo home run to left center.

For the game, UNA drew two walks, reached on two errors and was hit by a pitch three times. All seven runners were stranded.
