LIONS CLOSE REGULAR SEASON WITH OVERTIME WIN AT FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla., – The University of North Alabama men's basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the final 35 seconds to force overtime, then outscored FGCU 15-10 in the extra period to come away with a 78-73 road victory Saturday in the regular-season finale. With the win, UNA earns the No. 5 seed in the ASUN Conference Tournament and will open play on the road at fourth-seeded Stetson on Tuesday.

UNA (13-16 overall, 8-8 ASUN) trailed 63-59 after the Eagles hit two free throws in the final minute of play. Jamari Blackmon started the final sequence by connecting on a deep three-pointer to make it a two-point game with 26.4 seconds remaining.

The Lions immediately went to full-court pressure and forced a turnover. A steal by Christian Agnew led to a loose ball, which was jumped on by a diving Mervin James. The freshman was fouled in the process and calmly sank both free throws to tie the game with 18 seconds to play.

FGCU held for the final shot, but an air ball as time expired sent the game into overtime tied at 63-63.

The two teams traded baskets early in the overtime period before the Lions got a stop on defense and a three-point basket by C.J. Brim to take a 70-67 lead. The Lions would not trail again.
-
After two free throws by Blackmon made the score 74-69 with 59.3 seconds remaining, the home team had a chance to cut into the lead with a three-point play. The free throw, however, was missed and Brim drew a foul after making a basket on the ensuing possession. The junior from Tupelo, Miss., did not miss his opportunity, connecting on the foul shot to give UNA a 77-71 lead with 33.6 seconds left.

The Eagles added a basket in the lane, but would get no closer. Brim hit 1-of-2 free throws with 17.2 seconds remaining and FGCU could not score again.

The two teams entered the half in a 31-31 tie. After hitting 7-of-11 three-point attempts in the first half, however, FGCU was only 4-of-13 from long range over the final 20 minutes of regulation.

For the game, UNA shot 50 percent from the floor and held a 34-25 advantage in rebounding. After trailing in the category at the break, the Lions out-rebounded FGCU 19-10 in the second half.

Every player who got in the game scored for North Alabama, including five in double figures. Blackmon led UNA with a game-high 22 points. James added 13 points while Brim tossed in 12 points on the afternoon.  Agnew and Emanuel Littles rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points each.

Jalen Warren led FGCU (10-21 overall, 7-9 ASUN) with 19 points.

Tip-off time for North Alabama's ASUN quarterfinal game at Stetson on Tuesday is set for 6 p.m. (CST) at the Edmunds Center in DeLand, Fla.
