MEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS MVSU FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

FLORENCE – A third straight win by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team put the Lions over the .500 mark for the first time this season. Three players reached double figures in the 72-58 home victory over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday evening at Flowers Hall.

UNA is now 4-3 on the season and will host Carver College Sunday at 2 p.m.

Against MVSU, the Lions shot 56 percent from the floor, outscoring the visitors in each half. A three-point basket by Payton Youngblood banked in to beat the first-half buzzer and give UNA a 41-31 lead at the break. The Lions then maintained at least an eight-point lead over the final 20 minutes of play.

Youngblood, a graduate from Birmingham, was 3-for-4 from three-point range and finished with 13 points to lead North Alabama. Pape Cisse added a career-high 12 points for the Lions. The freshman from Dakar Senegal was 5-of-8 from the floor.

UNA held a 10-point lead early in the second half before a 7-0 run gave the Lions their largest lead of the night. A basket by Cisse was followed with a three-pointer by Dallas Howell. UNA then got a steal and layup by Detalian Brown to grab a 54-37 lead with 14:35 remaining.

Mississippi Valley State closed the gap to nine on two different occasions but could get no closer. After a three-pointer by the Devils cut the deficit to 61-52, another 6-0 run put the game out of reach. Baskets by Youngblood, C.J. Brim and Daniel Ortiz gave North Alabama a 15-point lead with 2:11 remaining.

Jamari Blackmon also reached double figures with 10 points for the Lions, who held a 34-30 rebounding advantage and scored 14 points off 20 MVSU turnovers.

Caleb Hunter led the Devils (0-5) with a game-high 15 points.

UNA will host Carver College on Dec. 5. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
