UNA RALLY COMES UP SHORT AGAINST BELLARMINE

FLORENCE – After trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half, a rally by the University of North Alabama men's basketball team came up two points short against Bellarmine. Pedro Bradshaw scored a game-high 24 points and the Knights maintained first place in the ASUN Conference with a 66-64 win Friday night at Flowers Hall.

Bellarmine used a 21-4 run to take control early in the second half. The Knights led 35-30 at the break before UNA got a basket by Emanuel Littles and a three-pointer by Mervin James to tie the game. The Lions, however, had five turnovers and only one field goal over the next 6:21 of playing time while the visitors made their move.

The Knights got a jumper in the lane before connecting = on four consecutive shots from three-point range during the run. A trey from the left win put Bellarmine ahead 56-39 with 12:55 remaining.

Defense allowed UNA to creep back into the contest. The Knights would not connect from the field for the final 9:27 of the game. The lead remained double digits until a pair of free throws by James made the score 64-56 at the 4:32 mark.

After two Bellarmine free throws pushed the lead back to 10, UNA closed the game on an 8-0 run. Jamari Blackmon connected on two free throws before hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key to make the score 66-61 with 2:42 to play.

The Lions then got a stop on defense and cut the deficit to 66-63 on a basket by Littles.

Bellarmine ran the clock down under a minute before missing a shot at the buzzer. UNA originally controlled the defensive rebound before an official review overturned the call and awarded the Knights possession with 5.9 seconds to play.

After forcing a turnover on the inbounds play, Detalian Brown drew a foul with 1.4 seconds remaining. The freshman sank the first free throw and intentionally missed the second. Bellarmine was able to secure the rebound as time expired.

Payton Youngblood led UNA with 13 points. James and Brown finished with 10 points each for the Lions.

The same two teams will meet again on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
