LIONS CAN’T END STREAK AGAINST LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va., – Liberty connected on 16 three-point baskets in a 74-54 home win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team on Tuesday. The win by the Flames completes the two-game sweep over UNA and puts Liberty into a tie for first place in the ASUN standings. UNA, however, lost for the seventh straight game, falling to 10-10 overall and 6-8 in the league standings.

As in the first meeting between the two teams on Monday, Liberty closed the first half strong to break open a close game. The Flames led 10-9 after a basket by Isaac Chatman with 14:03 remaining in the first half.

UNA made only two of its next 10 shots from the floor while the home team used a 27-16 spurt to stretch the lead to double digits. Consecutive baskets by Jamari Blackmon closed the gap to 27-20 before the Flames closed the half on a 14-3 run. The Lions were 1-for-9 from the floor over the final 6:35 of the half as Liberty took a 41-23 lead into the break.

North Alabama remained in striking distance over the final 20 minutes but could never get closer than 11 points. Three straight baskets by Emanuel Littles cut the deficit to 54-43 with 8:55 remaining. The Lions then forced a turnover and had a chance to cut the lead to single digits.

A three-point attempt was off the mark, however, and the Flames answered with back-to-back three-pointers on the next two possessions to regain a 17-point advantage.

The Lions got within 13 on a basket by C.J. Brim at the 3:04 mark. Another Liberty trey, however, put the game out of reach.

Blackmon led the Lions with 17 points. The junior from Hoover was 3-of-6 from three-point range to move into fifth place on the program's all-time list with 170 career made three-pointers. Mervin James added 11 points for the Lions.

Darius McGhee scored a game-high 24 points for Liberty (19-5 overall, 10-2 ASUN). The junior totaled 53 points in two games against North Alabama.

UNA is set to close the regular season with two home games next weekend against Lipscomb. Tip-off times are set for 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings at Flowers Hall.
