FORT MYERS, Fla., – Five FGCU players reached double figures in scoring as the Eagles handed the University of North Alabama men's basketball team a second straight defeat Friday night with an 86-60 win at Alico Arena. With the loss, UNA falls from first place in the ASUN Conference standings and will face FGCU again on Saturday with a 10-5 overall record, including a 6-3 mark in league play.
On Friday, the Lions could not overcome a slow start. UNA made just one of its first 14 shots from the floor as the home team built an early 12-2 lead.
After a jumper by Detalian Brown cut the deficit to 15-10, FGCU took control with a 24-3 run and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The Eagles led 43-23 at the half and were able to extend the lead over the final 20 minutes.
A basket by Mervin James on UNA's first possession of the second half briefly cut the deficit to 18 points. The Eagles, however, answered on the other. Back-to-back three-pointers later pushed the FGCU lead to 60-34 with 13:25 remaining.
North Alabama would get no closer than 24 points in the second half. The largest lead of the night came at the 3:22 mark when a jumper gave the home team an 86-54 lead.
FGCU held a commanding 57-41 rebounding advantage and added nine three-point baskets.
The Lions struggled to find offense throughout the game, hitting just over 34 percent from the floor with a 5-of-22 showing from three-point range.
James, who battled foul trouble throughout the game, was the only UNA player to reach double figures with 13 points. Jalen Warren led FGCU (8-6 overall, 3-4 ASUN) with a game-high 16 points.
The same two teams will play again at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
