UNA SOFTBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE TO KENNESAW STATE

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama softball team struggled at the plate Sunday in a 2-0 home loss to Kennesaw State, capping a three-game ASUN Conference sweep for the visiting Owls. The loss leaves UNA with a 16-9 record, including a 5-4 mark in league play.

KSU starter Melanie Bennett struck out a career-high 11 batters and the Lions went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position on the day. Offensively, a two-run home run in the top of the second inning proved to be the difference in the game.

The Owls led off the second inning with a bloop single that fell between the UNA short stop and left fielder. KSU's Taylor Cates then came to the plate and hit a blast to left field. It was the eighth home run of the series for the visitors.

UNA managed four hits on the day. The Lions had leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings, but failed to score. After a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth, Emma Broadfoot doubled to left field to put runners at second and third. Bennett, however, recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.

Lexie Harper led off the sixth inning with a single and Emma Latham was hit in the bottom of the seventh before reaching second on a wild pitch. Both were left stranded.

Megan Garst (7-6) was stuck with the pitching loss. She scattered four hits and walked three with seven strkeouts in seven innings of work. Harper and Broadfoot each finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate.

UNA will play a single game at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Alabama State. The Lions will return home the following weekend to host a double-header against Mississippi State.
