SOFTBALL LIONS DOWN ALABAMA STATE 4-1

MONTGOMERY – Katie Killen went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Maci Birdyshaw scattered four hits and struck out seven batters in a complete-game victory as the University of North Alabama softball team picked up a 4-1 victory at Alabama State on Tuesday. The win gives UNA a 17-9 record on the season as the Lions turn their attention to a home double-header against Mississippi State this weekend.

On Tuesday, UNA struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. Both runs came via the bat of freshman Emma Broadfoot. After a leadoff single by Harley Stokes, Broadfoot connected on her fourth home run of the season with a shot to left field.

A two-out rally extended the Lions' lead in the top of the third. Killen singled and stole second base before scoring on an RBI-triple by Sidney Bevis.

After Alabama State avoided a shutout with a single run in the bottom of the third inning, UNA wrapped up the scoring in the top of the fifth. Lexie Harper reached with a bunt-single. She stole second base before reaching third on a passed ball. Killen's single up the middle then gave the Lions a 4-1 lead.

Birdyshaw improved to 4-1 with the win in the circle. After allowing a leadoff single, she sat down eight straight batters before back-to-back doubles drove in the Hornets' lone run. The freshman from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., responded by retiring 12 of the next 13 batters, allowing only one more hit the rest of the way.

UNA finished with 10 hits on the day. All three of Killen's hits were singles. Broadfoot was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Harper was also 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Saturday's double-header against Mississippi is set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Stadium. Both games will be streamed on the ESPN+ platform.
