UNA WOMEN COME UP SHORT AT PITT 85-83

PITTSBURGH, Pa., – Pittsburgh rallied from a five-point deficit at the half and held off the University of North Alabama women's basketball team for an 85-83 home win on Wednesday. Hina Suzuki scored a career-high 28 points and added eight assists for the Lions, who fall to 5-6 on the season.

After leading by as many as 10 in the first half, UNA took a 44-39 lead into the break. The Lions shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the first two quarters, including eight three-point baskets.

Pitt began to take control in the third quarter. The Panthers opened the period on a 15-4 run. A basket at the 3:47 mark gave the home team a 54-48 lead. The Lions responded with a three-pointer by Alexis Callins, but another 6-0 spurt by Pitt pushed the lead to nine.

Suzuki was able to close the gap by the end of the period. She connected on two free throws, a runner in the lane and a three-pointer with three seconds remaining to make the score 60-57 heading into the final period.

In the fourth quarter, Pitt stretched the lead back to six, but could never pull away. UNA was also able to tie the score twice in the closing minutes, but could never take the lead.

The two teams traded free throws down the stretch. Two foul shots by Suzuki tied the game at 78-78 with 1:25 remaining. The Panthers answered with two foul shots of their own to regain the lead before Callins connected twice from the charity stripe to make the score 80-80 with 1:07 to play.

Pitt regained the lead with a basket in the paint and the Lions missed from long range on the ensuing possession. The Panthers then connected on their next 3-of-4 free throws to extend the lead to 85-80. A three-pointer by Suzuki with one second remaining accounted for the final score.

Suzuki's career-high passes her previous mark of 23 points set last season against North Florida. Jade Moore added 16 points, including four three-point baskets. Callins finished with 12 points while Skyler Gill recorded a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
