EASTERN KENTUCKY RALLIES TO TOP UNA MEN IN OVERTIME

RICHMOND, Ky., – Eastern Kentucky overcame an early 18-point deficit and forced North Alabama into a season-high 25 turnovers in an 80-76 overtime victory Wednesday evening in ASUN Conference men's basketball action. A fifth straight loss leaves UNA with a 9-17 overall record and a 2-11 mark in conference play.
 
Facing a 68-66 deficit in the closing seconds of regulation, EKU got a putback to tie the score as time expired. The Colonels then outscored UNA 12-8 in the extra period.
 
A fast start gave the Lions a big early lead. A three-point basket by Aleksa Matic put UNA ahead 24-6 with 11:22 remaining in the opening half.
 
The home team was able to close the gap before the break. A jumper in the final minute made the score 37-32 at the half.
 
The two teams traded baskets throughout the first seven minutes of the second half before the Lions were able to regain a double-digit lead. Another three-pointer by Matic pushed North Alabama's lead to 51-40 with 12:41 remaining.
 
EKU responded with a 15-4 run to tie the game. UNA was 2-for-9 from the floor with four turnovers during the spurt. A pair of free throws by the home team at the 6:59 mark tied the game at 55-55.
 
The Lions briefly regained the lead on the ensuing possession with a three-point basket by Daniel Ortiz. Neither team, however, could pull away. The Colonels took their first lead of the game when a basket with 2:36 to play made the score 63-63.
 
Ortiz again answered for the Lions with a trey on the other end to put UNA ahead by two.
 
UNA took a one-point lead into the final minute of regulation. C.J. Brim drew a foul with 7.9 seconds remaining. The senior connected on 1-of-2 free throws to set up the game-tying basket by the Colonels. After a desperation shot from near midcourt was off the mark, an offensive rebound and putback by Michael Moreno knotted the game at 68-68.
 
In the extra period, UNA was 3-of-6 from the floor but EKU connected on a three-point shot and went 7-of-8 from the free throw line to secure the win.
 
For the game, the Colonels hit 25-of-31 free throw attempts while the Lions were just 8-of-15 from the foul line. EKU also converted the 25 North Alabama turnovers into 20 points.
 
Brim led UNA, tying a career-high with 22 points. Ortiz also reached double figures with 19 points. Matic rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 12 points while Dallas Howell pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds.
 
North Alabama will return home to host Lipscomb on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
