SAMFORD RALLIES PAST UNA SOFTBALL 4-2

BIRMINGHAM – Samford scored four unanswered runs to overcome a 2-0 deficit and rally to defeat the University of North Alabama softball team Wednesday evening at home. UNA, which had beaten the Bulldogs three times this season, falls to 32-14 on the year.
 
UNA took the early lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Taylor Brown reached base on a fielder's choice and Haven Kirby singled. Hailey Jones later reached on a two-out fielding error, allowing both runners to score.
 
The Lions would struggle on offense from that point. Samford pitcher Jordyn Partain did not allow a hit past the second inning as the home team rallied.
 
After the first 11 Samford batters were retired by UNA starter Elena Escobar, the Bulldogs strung together three straight hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Back-to-back singles and a two-run double tied the game at 2-2.
 
In the bottom of the fifth, Samford got a solo home run to chase Escobar from the circle. The next batter tripled and later scored on an error to give the Bulldogs a 4-2 lead.
 
UNA did not get another baserunner until the top of the seventh, when Kirby drew a walk to break a streak of 14 consecutive retired batters by Partain. She advanced to second on a wild pitch but was stranded there when the game ended.
 
Kirby, Sidney Bevis and Georgia Land represented the three hits for the Lions. Escobar (2-3) took the pitching loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 4.1 innings of work.
 
UNA will host Memphis in a single game on Thursday. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.
