Austin Peay stuns North Alabama with late goal

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (October 1, 2023)Austin Peay used an 81st minute goal to defeat the UNA soccer team 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 1 at the Morgan Brothers Soccer Field in Clarksville, Tenn.

Less than 10 minutes shy of a scoreless draw, Austin Peay defender Lindsay McMahon netted the only goal of the match in the 81st minute. This is the sixth goal the Lions have allowed across the last three matches after only allowing one in the eight games prior.

North Alabama falls to 6-5-3 (2-3-1 ASUN) on the season, while the Governors improve to 5-8-1 (3-3-0 ASUN).

The Lions are 0-3 in Atlantic Sun Conference matches where they allow a goal, but 2-0-1 in conference games when shutting out the opponent.

Lion goalkeeper Adriana Wright stopped three shots on the match. The Alabama-Huntsville transfer has now stopped 41 shots on the season in 14 matches.

North Alabama led the Governors in shots 12-6 and, for the fourth time this season, did not allow a corner kick, while putting up seven. UNA now owns an 87-22 advantage over opponents in corners this season.

Senior Alice Bussey led the Lions with four shots on the match while freshman Giada Aldini had three of her own.

North Alabama's 87 corners are the most among any team in the ASUN. With 10 goals allowed through 14 games, UNA's .714 goals against average is also good enough for the best in the conference.

The Lions return home for a matchup with Eastern Kentucky on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Bill Jones Athletic Complex in Florence, Ala. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
