Lions close out non-conference play with win over Jacksonville State

Jacksonville, Ala. (September 10, 2023) – The University of North Alabama soccer team defeated Jacksonville State on the road, 1-0 on the road thanks to an Alice Bussey goal in the 55th minute of the match on Sunday afternoon.

"I am really proud of the ladies' performance today," said Lion head coach Chris Walker, "Sunday games are tough, especially on the road, and they managed to put together another impressive 90 minute performance."

Bussey scored the game's lone goal in the 55th minute, putting a shot from outside of the box just out of the keeper's reach. This was Bussey's fourth goal in her last three games.

The Lions led the Gamecocks in shots 8-6, while only allowing Jacksonville State one corner kick. The Lions have earned 42 corner kicks this season while only allowing their opponents 15.

Lion goalkeeper Adriana Wright stopped three shots to earn her fourth clean sheet of the season. Wright stayed in the game following an early collision with a Jacksonville State forward in the fifth minute of the match.

Wright has only allowed one goal in her last five matches, having stopped 15 shots in that time span.

The North Alabama backline has allowed just 27 shots on goal so far this season — the fewest in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

"I thought Briana Eads and Montana Merkle played extremely well at the back today," Walker said.

UNA now leads the ASUN Conference in fewest goals against (4) and corners (42). The Lions are allowing their opponents to score just 0.5 goals per game.

North Alabama improves to 4-2-2 on the season, while the Gamecocks fall to 4-4-0..

Up next, North Alabama travels to Kennesaw, Ga. to take on Kennesaw State on Thursday, Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. The match against Kennesaw State represents the Lions' first conference match of the season.
