Men’s Tennis set for ASUN dual at Lipscomb

Lions prep for final regular season road contest

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 5, 2024) – The University of North Alabama men's tennis team travels to Nashville, Tenn. for an Atlantic Sun Conference dual against the Lipscomb Bisons Saturday morning.

 

North Alabama heads to Lipscomb after a 2-0 week in home ASUN action last time out. The Lions won their third and fourth conference duals against EKU and Queens, defeating the Colonels and Royals, 5-2, from the UNA Tennis Complex. UNA won its second-ever dual against EKU while moving to 3-0 against the Queens.

 

North Alabama will go for its third-straight win and second-consecutive against the Bisons. The last time UNA won back-to-back matches against Lipscomb was in 1983. UNA faces Lipscomb in the final regular season road contest before ending with home duals against Austin Peay and Bellarmine on April 12 and 14.

SCOUTING THE LIONS: North Alabama has won four of its last five ASUN duals and will look for the fifth win against the Bisons. UNA wins their singles matches at a 53.3 percent rate, but for doubles, their winning percentage increases to 60.9 percent. Each player has at least three wins in doubles, with sophomore Lachlan Brain winning 12 matches to lead the team. Junior Nazar Fedoryshyn and freshman Izan Orgiles follow Brain tied for second with 11 wins. The Lions have at least two wins in singles with five securing eight or more wins. Freshman Birtan Duran is the leader in singles wins for UNA with a 13-5 record, including going 5-0 from flight no. 5. Duran has a 1-0 record from flight two, 1-0 from three, 3-3 from four and 3-2 from six.

 

SCOUTING THE BISONS: Lipscomb looks to get back in the win column as the Bisons resume conference play. They enter the dual at 8-11 with a 2-4 record in the ASUN, playing in their second dual after opening with a 6-1 defeat against Belmont. Lipscomb is 30-19 in doubles and win at a 61.2 percent rate while 56-57 in singles with a 49.6 percent win rate. The Bisons have three players with at least 10 wins in doubles, with Henrique Ushizima leading with 11 wins. Sebastian Dominguez and Krzysztof Wetoszka are the top-flight pair for Lipscomb with a 10-5 record. Five players have at least eight wins in singles play with Ushizima and Carlos Salas Tulla tied with nine. Lipscomb's head coach is Ben Roeser.

 

SERIES HISTORY: The Lions and Bisons meet for the 52nd time, with Lipscomb leading the series, 28-23. The last matchup resulted in a 4-1 win by UNA on April 8, 2023, defeating the Bisons for the first time since 2002. North Alabama won the first-ever matchup, 3-2, in 1935.
