Soccer falls to Salukis in Carbondale

UNA returns home to host Belmont on Sunday at Florence Sportsplex

CARBONDALE, Ill. (September 5, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team played its fifth match of the season Thursday night in Carbondale, Ill., dropping a 3-1 road decision to Southern Illinois University.   

Southern Illinois (3-1-2) scored within the first two minutes, but North Alabama (2-3) wasted no time responding as senior forward Haley Patterson took the assist from Adelyn Speight to net her first goal of the season in the fifth minute. Patterson's goal followed SIU's Sophia Schlicklin's goal from the second minute.  

SIU added another goal in the 33rd minute of the first period and the final in the 52nd minute of the second period.  

The Lions led in both shots and corner kicks over the Salukis with eight and five, respectively. Allanah Blye recorded two saves for the Lions. 

UNA had 19 players see the field in Carbondale with three playing the full 90 minutes in midfielder Speight, sophomore defender Gracie Tyrrell and senior defender Saniya Johnson.  

The Lions are back in action at home on Sunday, Sept. 8 against Belmont University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Florence Sportsplex in Florence, Ala. This will be UNA's first home game since the season opener against UT Martin, where the Lions are currently 1-0.
