Lions drop home match to Belmont, 1-0

UNA puts six shot on goal, 15 shots overall

FLORENCE, Ala. (September 8, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team played its sixth match of the season Sunday afternoon in Florence, Ala. against the Belmont Bruins. Belmont won 1-0.

North Alabama (2-4) shot seven times before Belmont (2-5) shot for the first time, which was the lone goal and score of the game. All seven shots came before the 27th minute with five different Lions finding a way to get their foot on the ball for a look.

Belmont scored the lone goal of the game in 31st minute from freshman midfielder Ava Labocki off the assist by sophomore defender Kennedy Bernsen. The Bruins had three other shots for the game, all coming in the second period.

The Lions led in most categories by a large amount. UNA had 10 shots in the first period with 15 overall for the game. Belmont had just four shots. North Alabama held the advantage with seven corner kicks to the Bruins' three.

This marks UNA's first loss this season when putting up 10 or more shots with five or more shots on goal. The 15 shots and seven corner kicks for North Alabama are both good enough for team-highs in the 2024 season. Gracie Tyrrell's three shots are tied for an individual high on the season.

UNA had 18 players see the field at the second home match of the year. Four Lions played the entire 90 minutes in Tyrrell, goalkeeper Allanah Blye, midfielder Molly Parham and defender Saniya Johnson. Giada Aldini found herself with extended time as 33 of her 94 total season minutes came Sunday afternoon against Belmont.

Today marked the fourth straight game with a different starting lineup for head coach Chris Walker.

The Lions head to the state capitol on Friday, September 13 to square off against Alabama State University. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex in Montgomery, Ala.
