LION SOFTBALL SWEEPS ALBANY STATE

ALBANY, Ga., – Harley Stokes was 4-for-7 with two more home runs as the University of North Alabama softball team swept a double-header at Albany State on Wednesday. The 18-5 and 8-0 mercy-rule victories give the Lions a 28-4 record on the season.

Katie Parr was also 5-for-5 on the day as UNA recorded its fourth consecutive mercy-rule wins. Stokes, a freshman from Demopolis, homered in each game an now leads the Gulf South Conference with 10 long balls on the season. She is batting .477 on the year.

In the opener, the Lions produced season-high numbers with 18 runs and 21 hits. A big first inning started the scoring. Kara Brewer gave UNA the early lead with a two-run double to left field. After an RBI-double by Hannah Shollenberger, Stokes homered to put the Lions ahead 4-0. RBI-singles by Mackenzie Roberts and Alex Brown then gave North Alabama a 7-0 lead at the end of the inning.

UNA was able to keep up the scoring, plating runs in the top of the second, third, fourth and fifth innings. The Lions put runners on second and third before a single by Parr scored both runs to make the score 9-0 in the second inning.

Meleah Hargett tripled before scoring on an error in the top of the third, then a six-run fourth inning broke the game open. The Lions send 10 batters to the plate in the frame. After Parr doubled to drive home another run, she scored when Roberts homered for the second time this season. An RBI-double by Shelby Woodard and a two-run single by Katie Eakes capped the scoring in the inning.

Sydney Sanders wrapped up the scoring for the Lions in the top of the sixth inning with a two-run home run. She becomes the 10th different player to homer for UNA this season.

Megan Garst got the pitching win to improve to 12-2. At the plate, eight players had multiple hits, including Parr, who went 4-for-4 with three RBI.

In the second game, UNA scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning to get the 8-0 lead and record the second straight mercy-rule win. Hargett and Stokes each went 2-for-4 to lead the way at the plate.

Hargett gave UNA the early lead with a single in the top of the first inning. She stole second and reached third before scoring on a wild pitch. Stokes then led off the second inning with a solo home run.

After a scoreless third inning, the Lions took advantage of an ASU error to a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth. UNA scored on an error and added RBI-singles by Brown, Stokes and Hargett in the top of the sixth inning to account for the final score.

Laken Distefano (11-1) pitched the first five innings to get the win. Her lone hit allowed a single in the bottom of the third inning. Brittany Ledbetter pitched a scoreless sixth inning to complete the shutout.
