TIGERS USE FREE THROWS TO PULL AWAY FROM UNA MEN

LIVINGSTON – West Alabama connected on 44-of-52 free throw attempts in a 100-74 home victory over North Alabama Thursday evening in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. Three UNA players fouled out as the two teams combined for 65 personal fouls on the night. The loss leaves the Lions with a 12-8 overall record and 9-5 mark in GSC play.

After leading 38-25 at the half, the Tigers shot 65 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes, piling up points in the paint as well as from the charity stripe. With a commanding 38-19 rebounding advantage, UWA produced 38 points in the paint and 15 second-chance points.

A basket by Austin Timms early in the second half cut the deficit to 41-39 but the Lions could never tie or take the lead. An 11-0 West Alabama run pushed the lead to double digits and UNA would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.

West Alabama's free throw attempts tied a single-game school record while the free throws made were just one shy of a record. UNA connected on 25-of-28 attempts from the foul line.

Bilal Richardson was the first UNA player to reach five fouls, exiting the game with 6:08 remaining and the Lions facing a 68-57 deficit. Tavaras Tolliver fouled out at the 2:45 mark, getting a personal, followed by a technical. Exactly 15 seconds later, Da'Shaun Griffin was called for his fifth foul. Timms, John Fletcher, Dakota Holtzclaw and Dimario Jackson all finished the game with four fouls.

Jackson led the Lions with 13 points. Timms, Fletcher and Richardson added 11 points each. Acie Vance led West Alabama (7-11 overall, 4-10 GSC) with a game-high 26 points.

UNA will continued its GSC road swing on Saturday at West Georgia. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. (EST) at the Coliseum on the UWG campus.
