UNA MEN DOWN CUMBERLAND 82-77

FLORENCE – Dimario Jackson scored 22 points and Sharwyn McGee added a double-double as the University of North Alabama men's basketball team edged Cumberland 82-77 Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. The win keeps UNA unbeaten at 3-0 on the season.
 
With the game tied at 77-77 in the final minute of play, McGee took over in the post. The junior from Greensboro, N.C. blocked a potential go-ahead shot and collected the rebound with 55 seconds remaining. He then grabbed an offensive board at the other end and was fouled after scoring on the putback to give UNA a two-point lead. His free throw completed the three-point play and made the score 80-77.
 
Cumberland was unable to score the rest of the. McGee added another offensive board and putback at the buzzer to finish with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
 
UNA trailed 36-34 at the half with only one three-point basket. In the second half, the Lions shot 54.5 percent from the floor, including a 4-for-8 showing from three-point range. Myrek Lee-Fowlkes and DeAndre McKinnie each hit a pair of three-pointers in the second as UNA led by as many as nine.
 
McKinnie's second trey gave North Alabama a 60-51 lead with 10:02 remaining. Cumberland, however, would rally. The Phoenix (2-4) followed with a 10-1 run to cut the deficit to a single point.
 
After the Lions stretched the lead back to six on two different occasions down the stretch, the visitors used an 8-2 run to tie the game at 76-76 at the 2:01 mark. After Cumberland took a brief 77-76 lead on a foul shot with 1:24 remaining, UNA tied the score with a free throw by Damion Ottman on the ensuing possession to set up the final sequence.
 
Lee-Fowlkes finished with 13 points for UNA. Jackson also dished out seven assists on the day. Will Shelton led Cumberland with a game-high 25 points.
 
UNA will host Lane on Nov. 26. Tip-off time as been moved to 7 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
