UNA MEN DOWN MILES 86-74

FLORENCE – Dimario Jackson scored 24 points and Sharwyn McGee pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to an 86-74 win over Miles College Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. With the win, UNA improves to 4-1 on the season and readies for its Gulf South Conference opener Sunday against UAH.
 
Against Miles, the Lions pulled away in the second half by hitting 50 percent (16-of-32) from the floor. UNA led 41-36 at the break before opening the second half on an 11-4 run to push its lead to double digits. The Golden Bears would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
 
North Alabama led 57-51 at the 11:18 mark before a 10-0 run stretched the lead to 16 points. It was the largest lead of the game for the Lions, who maintained a double-digit lead down the stretch.
 
UNA got to the free throw line 32 times, connecting on 24 attempts, including a 11-of-14 showing in the second half. Jackson was 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Jeff Hodges was 4-for-4 from the foul line and added 13 points. Austin Timms also scored 13 on the night while Myrek Lee-Fowlkes rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 11 points. McGee just missed a double-double with nine points before fouling out with 2:48 remaining.
 
E. Reginald Smalls led Miles (2-4) with 22 points for the game.
 
Sunday's GSC opener against the pre-season favorite Chargers is set for a 4 p.m. tip-off at Flowers Hall.
